Preparation for First Grade: What Really Matters That the Child Should Know Before the First Day

The bag is already standing by the door, the pencil case is organized, the name stickers have been stuck on every notebook. The child is excited, maybe even counting days. Then, somewhere on an evening at the end of August, a small and troubling question arises in the parent: Wait, is he really ready? I encounter this question every year, and behind it almost always hides another question: Have I prepared him enough? Many parents mean this in terms of letters, numbers, writing the name. The scent of nylon wrappers, of equipment lists circulating in WhatsApp groups, of parents trying to remember whether they bought a 15‑line notebook or a 20‑line one. Millions of families are organizing for the September 1 bell, and it is an exciting preparation — a new start, old friends, a teacher they have not yet met. Within that picture there are families asking a completely different question. Not "Which grade is he entering" but "Does he even need to step into a classroom at all." To many parents this question sounds subversive, perhaps even dangerous. But if you strip away the emotional layer, what remains is a perfectly legitimate educational question: Does a child really have to spend most of his school‑age hours inside a class of about thirty students in order to grow into a curious, learned, and socially connected person?
