Watermen’s Museum in Yorktown, Virginia

Unlike museums that focus on naval battles or famous ships, the Watermen’s Museum celebrates the ordinary people who built a culture around the Chesapeake Bay. Known as “watermen,” this group includes the generations of fishermen, crabbers, oystermen, boatbuilders, and commercial mariners whose livelihoods depended on understanding the tides, winds, and rhythms of the water.  The museum’s collections include wooden workboats, handmade decoys, oyster tongs, crab pots, nets, and other maritime artifacts that trace centuries of labor on Virginia’s waterways. They tell the story of a profession that shaped the economy, cuisine, and identity of the region.  You can still see the significance of these professions by simply looking out the museum's windows: The site overlooks the York River, where commercial fishing boats still work the same waters that sustained earlier generations. Outdoor exhibits and programs connect visitors with these working watermen, including boatbuilding demonstrations, educational workshops, and community events.  Rather than preserving maritime history behind glass, the Watermen’s Museum invites visitors to understand the skills and knowledge that allowed people to make a living from one of North America’s most productive estuaries.
