Retail bundle wars: Walmart is offering combined memberships with Sam’s Club. The price point is curious

Walmart Inc. has announced a new membership option—and included a side of shade. We’ll get to the shade in a moment, but first the deal: The big-box retailer is now offering customers a combined membership to Walmart+ and Sam’s Club Plus for $120 annually.  Combined, those two memberships previously cost $218 a year, or $98 for Walmart+ and $120 for Sam’s Club Plus.  “We’re giving people a reason to expect more from their memberships,” Walmart president and CEO John Furner said in a statement. “For $120 a year, we’re raising expectations for what a membership can deliver: more money in their pockets and more time to call their own.” What does the new bundle come with? The annual Walmart+ with Sam’s Club Plus membership comes with member-only deals, 2% Sam’s cash on eligible purchases, and free delivery from both retailers.  Members can also get 10 cents off per gallon at over 17,000 participating stations and a membership to Peacock or Paramount+. Both offers were previously available for Walmart+ members.  Already paying for both memberships? The company is offering most members a “prorated refund” for Walmart+. Customers can still purchase individual Walmart+ memberships.  Fast Company has reached out to Walmart to confirm the size of the refund. We’ll update this post if we hear back.  Cheaper than a competitor that shall not be named Now, to the slight, which comes in the form of a membership cost comparison. Walmart’s announcement states, “Consider what people may be paying today: $139 for a retail membership with delivery.” While the company doesn’t name any names, that’s the exact annual price of one of its biggest competitors: Amazon Prime. Walmart, the company, is having a successful run, reporting a 23% rise year-over-year (YOY) in e-commerce sales in fiscal year 2027 quarter two. Walmart, the brand, saw a 12.8% increase YOY in international net sales, while Sam’s Club’s net sales grew by 8.8% YOY. Shares of Walmart Inc. (Nasdaq: WMT) were up 5.27% this year as of Monday’s close. However, the stock is down 7.21% over the last six months.
