AMD is the latest tech company to hit a $1 trillion market cap. Here’s why

Yesterday, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (Nasdaq: AMD) became the latest member of one of the world’s most exclusive clubs: companies worth $1 trillion or more. AMD crossed the threshold after a remarkable run in the stock market recently, with the company’s stock price surging 30% in the last 30 days. Here’s what you need to know. Why did AMD surge yesterday? Yesterday, Advanced Micro Devices’ stock price rose nearly 10%, closing the day at $615.52. That move boosted the company’s market capitalization to a level it had never reached before: above a $1 trillion valuation. The chipmaker’s stock price surged, along with other AI-adjacent hardware stocks, on broad investor optimism about the future of artificial intelligence.  That optimism was helped by the launch of Meta’s AI agent app earlier this month. Muse is designed for individuals and aimed at helping them manage their digital life. It is currently the No. 1 app in Apple’s App Store, suggesting broad appeal. While AMD doesn’t own a slice of Muse, rapid public adoption of any new AI app is generally seen by investors as a positive sign that companies will continue to build out infrastructure to support their AI offerings. AMD is one of the largest chipmakers operating in the AI space, so any increase in AI infrastructure spending is likely to have a trickle-down effect on the company’s product offerings, and thus its bottom line. As noted by Reuters, AMD wasn’t the only chip stock to get a boost yesterday. Competitor Intel also saw its shares surge—up over 12%. Yet AMD garnered the majority of the headlines due to its passing the $1 trillion market cap barrier. The $1 trillion club expands With AMD’s ascension into the $1 trillion club yesterday, its membership now totals 16. Here’s how AMD’s current valuation compares with its contemporaries, according to data compiled by CompaniesMarketCap: Nvidia: $5.5 trillion Apple: $4.9 trillion Alphabet (Google): $4.3 trillion Microsoft: $3.6 trillion Amazon: $2.7 trillion Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC): $2.3 trillion SpaceX: $2 trillion Meta: $1.9 trillion Broadcom: $1.7 trillion Saudi Aramco: $1.6 trillion Tesla: $1.4 trillion Samsung: $1.3 trillion Micron: $1.2 trillion Berkshire Hathaway: $1 trillion Eli Lilly: $1 trillion Advanced Micro Devices: $1 trillion AMD has had a great 2026 As of the time of this writing, AMD shares are up by about half a percent, to nearly $619 per share. That’s a remarkable rise from where the chipmaker started 2026. Back in early January, the company’s stock price hovered around $223 per share. Since then, it has seen a nearly 190% increase year to date. Much of that rise has been due to surging demand for the company’s chip offerings as enterprise clients look to build out data centers for AI expansion. Looking back a little further—over the past 12 months—AMD shares are up even more: nearly 288%. Those gains were accelerated this month as shares surged more than 30%, solidifying the company’s spot in the $1 trillion club.Of course, it’s worth noting that even a slight decline in AMD’s stock price could see the chipmaker drop below the psychologically important threshold.
